Green Festival Keeps Its Eye on the Ball

This weekend I volunteered at Seattle’s Green Festival at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center. Before my shift at Exhibitor Registration began, I spent a few hours roaming the hundreds of booths there – everything from chips and salsa to home solar installation systems.

Of course there were the typical green products, which no doubt are great, but have not evolved much over the years - just how much of our population is suitable to carry a hemp wallet? I was, however, taken by surprise by a new company called Fair Trade Sports. They are the first sports equipment company in the U.S. to have a full line of eco-certified Fair Trade sports balls. They ensure fair wages and healthy work conditions for their adult workers and all of the rubber is sourced sustainably from a forest that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. I just happened to be in the market for a soccer ball, so I purchased a club ball and can’t wait to break it in.

Although many people may have not been in the market for a soccer ball yesterday, it’s still a massive industry with over 35 million soccer balls being produced every year. The founder, Scott James, explained to me that they price their product so it is comparable with product from Nike or Adidas, but they are hoping the big FSC logo on the ball will draw consumers to make the socially responsible choice. It was great to see such widely-used main-stream products moving into the green world.
