LinkedIn hits the 50 million mark

linkedinFor those of you LinkedIn users out there, ReadWriteWeb posted an interesting little tid bit about the growth of LinkedIn today. The popular social networking platform gained 1 million users this month and has officially broken the 50 million mark for total users.

The overall content of the post gets a little techy, but to me the most important message is that LinkedIn is still growing.  If it is growing, that means more people are using it and finding value from it.

What’s the point?  To put it simply, the point is that 50 million users and growing is a lot.  Whether you are researching potential employers, educating yourself about an important prospect or refreshing your memory about the contacts you made at a recent networking event, the probability that this information will be on LinkedIn is likely and growing.

Networking in the Digital Age

Recently we had the opportunity to give presentations to our clients about how to utilize social media to grow their business. These trainings focused on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and blogging. There was great discussion about how to remain appropriate and professional, but still let your personality shine through. Clients learned how to leverage their social network in the online world to gather leads and referrals. We like to call it networking in the digital age. Just don’t forget that in-person meetings are important as well. After you’ve built a relationship with a business contact online, ask them to attend an industry event or to grab a cup of coffee to help turn a contact into a client.
